No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
